Macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness:
Early diagnosis is essential to prevent vision loss
If your vision becomes blurry or distorted with age, it may be more than simple presbyopia—suspect macular degeneration. This degenerative retinal disease damages the macula, the center of the retina, and can lead to vision loss or blindness, affecting reading, driving, and daily life. Macular degeneration is classified as dry or wet. Dry type, found in about 80% of patients, involves drusen buildup that blocks oxygen and nutrients. Wet type grows abnormal blood vessels that bleed and swell, rapidly damaging vision. Because wet macular degeneration progresses quickly and carries a high risk of blindness, early diagnosis and active treatment are critical.
